Pterygoid and Zygomatic
Dental Implants
Solutions for patients with severe bone loss
No bone? No problem.
Pterygoid and Zygomatic dental implants can be considered for patients who have significant bone loss in the upper jawbone. These procedures are performed by highly trained implant specialists including Dr. Dan Holtzclaw, Chief Clinical Officer of the Advanced Dental Implant Center (ADIC) network, and other ADIC doctors across our practice locations.
“With Pterygoid and Zygomatic dental implants, we help patients who’ve been told they are not a candidate for dental implants. We give patients their hope and confidence back. We give them a second chance to smile for the first time.”
– Dr. Dan Holtzclaw, Chief Clinical Officer, Advanced Dental Implant Center
What Are Pterygoid Dental Implants?
Pterygoid dental implants are anchored at a 45-degree angle into the pterygoid bone, which is located in the back of the upper jawbone. This type of implant is typically used when there is not enough bone volume in the upper jawbone to support traditional dental implants. Since the pterygoid bone is a strong and dense bone that provides excellent support for dental implants, doctors at Advanced Dental Implant Center can offer Pterygoid dental implants as a long-term solution to missing or damaged teeth.

What Are Zygomatic Dental Implants?
Zygomatic dental implants are anchored into the zygomatic bone, which is located in the cheekbone area. This type of implant is also used in cases where there is not enough bone volume in the upper jawbone to support traditional implants. The zygomatic bone is longer and stronger than the jawbone and provides an excellent alternative to traditional implants in these cases.
Key Benefits of Pterygoid and Zygomatic Implants
Pterygoid and Zygomatic dental implant solutions are advanced procedures typically recommended for patients who have experienced significant bone loss in the upper jawbone, often due to prolonged tooth loss or gum disease. They may also be recommended for patients who have been told they are not a candidate for traditional dental implant surgery.
Permanently replace missing teeth
For the most part, Pterygoid and Zygomatic dental implants can serve as a permanent, long-term solution to missing or damaged teeth, providing you with a strong and stable smile (like your natural teeth) with the functionality to enjoy the foods you love, while speaking and smiling with confidence.
Solution for severe bone loss patients
Patients who suffer from severe bone loss are typically told they do not have enough bone for traditional dental implant surgery. With Pterygoid and Zygomatic implants, the impossible is now possible, and patients can benefit from enjoying their life with permanent teeth secured by implants.
High success rate
Both Pterygoid and Zygomatic dental implants have a 99% success rate* in helping patients with severe bone loss.
Avoid sinus augmentation and/or bone grafting procedures
Both sinus augmentation and bone grafting procedures are typically needed to treat patients with severe jawbone loss before attempting to place traditional implants. With Pterygoid and Zygomatic dental implants, these procedures are not needed.

Patient Case Study
“I feel so much better! I’m happy that I had this doctor to help me. I’m just free!”
Anne Marie, a 92-year-old Advanced Dental Implant Center patient, visited our San Diego practice with a long history of wearing dentures. Due to her many years as a denture wearer, Anne Marie suffered from severe amounts of bone loss that prevented the placement of normal dental implants. Dr. Dan Holtzclaw, Chief Clinical Officer, treated Anne Marie with Pterygoid and Zygomatic implants – this allowed Dr. Holtzclaw to restore her smile on the same day with a new set of permanent teeth and successfully eliminate the denture. Anne Marie no longer has to deal with sticky denture adhesives and the daily removal of her teeth. She said it best: “I’m just free!”
